Chapter 1. Viewing images

Getting started

The Inzomia Image Viewer is a powerful image viewer that is really easy to use. The general idea behind the program is to always maximize the space for the image on screen and to always make it easy to zoom in on a specific detail in you picture.

When you start the Inzomia image viewer for the first time you will be presented with four windows in the browser layout. Viewing images is best done in the image layout that you select by double clicking the title bar of the image window.

The window shell/exporer

Select "View folder in Inzomia Viewer 3" to view the selected image and browse the images in the folder

Select "View image in Inzomia Viewer 3" to view an image and start making a playlist with it or add it to the current playlist.

Opening a photo

To open an image into the Inzomia image viewer:

  • Drag the image from the window shell to the image window.
  • Select "View with Inzomia viewer 3" from the image context menu that is displayed when right-clicking a file in the windows shell.
  • Double-click a thumbnail in the playlist window.

Inzomia viewer is optimized to be able to display really large digital photos quickly.

When you load images from the playlist the next image will be preloaded transparently in the background. Because of this the next image is displayed instantly when you decide to load it.

Viewing a photo

When viewing an image you can easily zoom in on a detail. Move the cursor to the part of the image you are interested in. While holding the right mouse button pressed move the mouse forward to zoom in. To move away out from the pixel move the mouse button toward you while still holding the right mouse button pressed. The image can be moved if you hold down the left mouse button while moving the mouse.

Filtering makes images less pixeled when zoomed in

When an image is zoomed it is automatically filtered to improve image quality. The left side shows the image unfiltered and the right shows the same image with filter.

Playlists

Using playlists is a great tool to order your image collection. When viewing an image from a playlist you can doubleclick with the left/right mouse button anywhere on the image to load the next/previous image in the playlist.

Fullscreen

Fullscreen mode allows you to view your image without annoying buttons or windows making maximum use of your screen area. To view your image in fullscreen mode move the cursor to the top of the image window, a toolbar with buttons will appear. A button will appear on top of the image in the upper right corner. Click the button to go to fullscreen mode. To return to the windowed mode simply repeat the process or hit the Esc key.

QuickView

QuickView mode can be selected by the shortcut combination "Ctrl + 1". In quickmode the image window is maximized over all other windows regardless of layout. The same key combination restores the viewer from QuickView mode.

Chapter 2. Major features

This chapter gives a brief overview of the major features in the Inzomia image viewer.

New in version 3.0

View media files

The Inzomia viewer supports viewing common media files through other viewers in the browser window. If you open a movie from the file window it will be played back in the browser window. Provided your computer has the right viewers installed it is possible to view, among other formats: pdf, avi, rm, mov and mpeg files.

Save web pages as images

The viewer supports transforming a web page that is displayed in the browser to an image. The image can then be viewed with the normal features like smooth zoom. You can also save the created image for later use.

Image preload

When you are viewing a photo the will load and prepare the next image in the background making it immediately available when you want to view it.

Windows image viewer replacement

Select "View folder with Inzomia Viewer 3" to view the selected image and browse the folder the same way the windows image viewer works but faster and with all the features of the Inzomia viewer.

New in version 2.50

Browse the web and grab images

The Browser window is a fully featured web browser with added support for downloading images and stopping popups. The viewer home page contains a lot of resources to help you find images on the Internet. When you have a page with images or links to images click the "grab" button to download them straight into your playlist. Remember to save grabbed images you want to keep for later.

Create a stand-alone slideshows as an .exe file

Press the "save" button in the playlist window and you can save your playlist as a self-running slideshow. The slideshow can even be played on computers not having the Inzomia viewer installed and the slideshow will not be limit with any trial period. You are free to redistribute exe slideshow as you wish.

Save a playlist with images in a zip file

When you save your playlist you get the option to save your playlist as a zip file with all images in it. When you save your images with the playlist you can easily move them to another computer and the playlist will still work, including changed rotations and zoom.

Classic features

Playlist stored as xml

Playlists are stored in the standard xml format. It is easy to write image utilities that take playlists as input or to create other programs that create playlists as output.

Drag n drop to other programs

Support for drag n drop makes it possible to drag an image from the playlist to, for example, your favorite paint or mail program.

Transitions

When the viewer changes from one image to another a smooth transition is played. You can change the type of transition or disable them from the preferences. By default transitions are used for slideshows.

Quick hide

Quick hide makes it quick and easy to hide/view the Inzomia viewer application. Hold down the Shift key and press the Esc key to quick-hide the application, restore the viewer to normal by pressing the same keys again. Hiding of the viewer is very quick and it is not possible to restore it from the taskbar by mistake, only the Esc + Shift key will bring it back up from quick-hide. The viewer has to be active to wake up from quick hide. Activate the viewer application by selecting it in the taskbar.

Quick browse

Quick browse makes it quick and easy to browse a playlist with a large number of thumbnail images. When you have a number of images to your playlist select "quick browse" from one of the thumbnails context menu or hold down the CTRL key while pressing the 1 key. The playlist window will expand to cover the desktop. When you double click a thumbnail to display the image the playlist window will be restored to its original size and position. You can also end the quick browse mode from any of the thumbnails context menu or by holding the CTRL key while pressing the 1 key.

Skinned user interface

The whole user interface is skinned. Skin files are specified in xml format with tags explained in the documentation. If you are interested in creating a new skin for the viewer contact us to have it distributed with future versions of the viewer, we also license customized viewers for bundling or use in companies

View images in compressed zip files

Images in zip files are handles just as easy as folders. You never need to care about decompressing zipped images again.

Smooth filtered zoom

The viewer has build-in smooth filtered zoom. Hold down and move the cursor forward to zoom in toward the cursor or back to zoom out from the cursors position.

Fullscreen view

Fullscreen mode lets you view images without disturbing windows and buttons. You are still able to bring forward the most important part of the user interface by moving the cursor to the top and right edge of the screen.

Rotate images

It quite common to take pictures with the camera rotated 90 degrees. The viewer lets you turn your photos right without altering the actual image file. Rotations are stored in the playlist. The playlist always shows the image in its original unrotated form.

Make image playlists

Make lists of your favorite images and store them as playlists only a few bytes large. With playlists you can organize your pictures without moving them around on the harddrive. Use different playlists to organize images in different ways. Playlists can later be added to other playlists to form new playlists and from the context meny you can open the folder where the image is stored.

Slideshows

Show your photos as a slideshow in windowed or fullscreen mode, and share them with others.

Ignore images based on size or name

When working with web pages it is common to have photos and a lot of small images mixed. For example you might have a web image gallery where each large image has one small thumbnail. With the Inzomia viewer it is simple to get the viewer to automatically ignore all but the large images.

Command line options

The viewer accepts a number of command line arguments. Useful, for example, if you want to launch the viewer from an application/script or if you want to create a shortcut that always view images in a specific folder.

Chapter 3. Menus

The menu bar helps to give better overview of the available functions in the Inzomia image viewer. Shortcut keys can be assigned to all menu items. You can turn the top menu on/off with the 'Home' key or the key you have currently assigned for menu toggle.

Chapter 4. Windows

General

The Inzomia image viewer can be used in either Windowed or Fullscreen mode. In window mode the viewer has four windows and a menubar where only the image window needs to be visible:

  • The Image window displays images
  • The Playlist window shows playlists
  • The Browser window displays web pages
  • The Shell window displays folders in the windows shell ie the file system.

All windows can be resized and moved and the windows snap to the image window and the desktop edges although this behavior can be turned off from the Preferences.

Image Window

The image window displays the actual image. Zoom the image by holding down the right mouse button while moving then mouse forward or backward. Pan the image by holding down the left mouse button while moving the cursor. To load a new image double-click its thumbnail in the playlist window.

The image windows title bar displays the name of the image together with its pixel dimension and current scale.

Inzomia viewer image window

You can drag images from other programs directly to the image window without first adding it to the playlist. You can for example possible view an image from Internet Explorer simply by dragging the image from the browser and drop it on the image window.

There are three sets of toolbar buttons inside the image window. By default the toolbar is hidden to allow as much as possible of the image to show. To show the hidden toolbar buttons make sure the image window is active, if it is not click somewhere inside the window, and move the cursor to the top of the window.

Attribute buttons

The attribute buttons to the left change how the image is displayed. The top left button scales the image to fit the image inside the current window. The next button scales the current image to its natural size 1:1 (100%). The last two buttons let you rotate the current image.

When a playlist is saved the image attributes are saved with it. Changing attributes does not in any way alter the actual image file.

Slideshow buttons

The slideshow buttons control playback of a slideshow. From the left the buttons are play, stop, pause, next and previous. Play starts the slideshow and displays each image for the number of seconds selected in the options, default is 5 seconds. When a slideshow is running or is paused a small progress bar is displayed on top of the play-button. The stop button stops the slideshow and the pause pauses the slideshow so it can be started later at the same image. The next and previous buttons shows to the next or previous image in the slideshow. You can also jump around in the slideshow while it is playing by clicking thumbnails in the playlist.

Window buttons

The right edge buttons changes the main four windows. The first button switches the image window to fullscreen mode. The second button hides or shows the playlist window, the third button hides or shows the web browser window and the last button hides or shows the file explorer window.

Window buttons - in Fullscreen mode

The right edge buttons in fullscreen mode replace the playlist window. All images in your current playlist will be shown on the right edge. Scroll the thumbnail list by moving the cursor up or down on the right edge. You can load new images by clicking the thumbnails. To the left of the thumbnail list you find the button to return to windowed mode.

Shortcuts

If you double click with the left mousebutton anywhere inside the imagwindow the next image in your playlist will be loaded. If you double click with the right mousebutton anywhere inside the imagwindow the previous image in your playlist will be loaded.

Playlist window

The playlist window displays large thumbnails of the images currently in your playlist. You can open an image from the playlist into the image window by double-clicking its thumbnail.

Adding images

Add images to you playlist by:

  • Click the "add file" or "add dir" button at the bottom of the playlist window
  • Drag files or folders to the playlist window
  • Use the context menu from the Shell window
  • Use the context menu from the window explorer

When you add folders to the playlist all the images in the folders will be added but not images in subfolders. You can add zip files to the playlist and all images in the zip file will be added to the playlist regardless of the directory structure in the archive. It is also possible to merge two playlists by adding a previously saved playlists to the current playlist.

In the options you can set filters to ignore certain types of files. It is for example possible to skip all images smaller then 50kb or all images with a filename starting with "tmb_", very useful when working with images in web pages where you have a few photos but a lot of icons, button and thumbnail images. Inzomia zoom studio saves its thumbnails prefixed with tmb_ (http://www.inzomia.com).

When you add images to the playlist window a thumbnail is automatically created after a few seconds. While thumbnails are being added the application may run a bit slower. When you are adding a lot of images the title of the playlist window will change to let you know the application is working, you can still viewer images as the thumbnails are being created.

Working with the playlist

You can change the order of the playlist by dragging the thumbnails. Right clicking a thumbnail brings up a context menu.

The following commands are available from the context menu of a thumbnail:

Title Description
Browse folder Open the explorer window to where the image is located. If the image is from an archive the file browser will open the folder of the arhive file.
Remove Remove the image from the playlist
Lock Lock the image
Unlock Unlock the image
Quick browse Go to quickbrowse mode where the playlist window is large
Decrypt Decrypt the image if it is encrypted. Not for public use yet
Print image Print the image

Locked images will not be removed from the playlist when you select clear clear but they will be removed by the remove command. Locking images and using clear is very useful when you want to pick out a few images from a folder. Start by adding the folder to the playlist then lock the images you want to keep and finish by clearing the complete playlist and you are left with the selected images you locked. When you select "browse folder" the shell window will open the folder where the image is stored.

Just as you can drag images to the playlist window it is possible to drag images from the playlist window to other programs or the image window.

At the bottom of the playlist window there is a button area with the following functions:

Button Description
Load Load a previously stored image playlist
Save Open dialog to save the playlist
Close Close down the viewer application
Add file Add one or more image files to the playlist
Add dir Add all image files in a directory to the playlist
Prefs Edit program preferences. Preferences is described in detail in another part of the documentation.

Chapter 5. Playlist

What can be done with playlists

Working with playlists is key to getting the most out of the Inzomia image viewer. Playlists let you organize photos on your computer without the need for a database or to move them into a special folder.

Use playlists to create collections of your favorite images, to get an overview of image folders or to select a few images from many.

Playlists are also used to create slideshows.

Creating a playlist

Create a new playlist by:

  • Dropping an image files, zip or rar archives or a folder on the playlist window
  • Select "View image with Inzomia viewer 3" or "Browse folder with Inzomia viewer" from the context menu of an image-file or zip/rar-archive containing images.
  • Select "Browse with Inzomia viewer 3" from the context menu of a folder containing images.
  • From the shell menu select "Add image to playlist" from the context menu of an image file.
  • Drag files from the shell window to the playlist window.
  • From the playlist window click the "Add Image" or "Add Dir".

Playing a slideshow

Your playlist can always be played as a slideshow. Activate the image window and move the cursor toward the top of the window to view the image window toolbar. In the middle of the toolbar you have the buttons to control the slideshow. If you press the playbutton the slideshow will start from the first image in the playlist. Skip to the next or previous image with the next/previous buttons or use a shortcut. When a slideshow is playing you can also jump around in the playlist by double-clicking thumbnails in the playlist window. If you click the pause button the playlist will pause at the current image and continue when you press pause again. If you press stop the slideshow will stop and start from the first image when you press play again.

A slideshow can be saved as a small playlist, as a zipped playlist or as a self running exe slideshow which can be distributed for free to people who do not own the Inzomia viewer.

Picking a few images from many

When you want to select a few images from a large image collection the lock function is a good tool to use. Find the thumbnails for the images you want to keep and select lock from the context menu. The locked images will get a small lock icon to indicate that the image is locked. The next step is to click the clear button to remove all images from the playlist except the locked images. Use this technique to search through large image collections to find the images you need. Add complete folders to the playlist to quickly scan for the image you search and switch between the playlist layout to see many thumbnails at the same time and the image layout to examine images.

When you are finished you can save the selected images to a new folder. If you also save a playlist with the images it will be easy to find the folder you picked the images from by using the "open folder" command from the context menu on a thumbnail.

Saving a playlist

When clicking the save button you will be prompted with a dialog to select the format to save in.

"Save playlist only" saves the playlist for use on the computer it was created on. The playlist uses absolute paths so the playlist file may be moved to another location as long as it is on the same computer as the images. The playlist file will be very small.

"Save playlist with images" saves the playlist together with all the images in the playlist. The stored zip file may be moved to another computer or for example burned on a CD. The playlist file will be large.

"Create a stand-alone slideshow" will save the playlist, image and a fullscreen viewer so that the slideshow will be played when the file is double clicked. This playlist can be used on computers that do not have the viewer installed.

"Copy all images to a folder" does not save the playlist but copies all images in the playlist to a folder. This is useful for example if you want to save grabbed images.

Printing images

Printing an image is done by right clicking the image thumbnail in the playlist window. Printing is done in the same way as if you right clicked a .htm file (showing your image) in the windows explorer and select "print". If you have trouble getting the print function to work check if you can print by right clicking a .htm file from the windows explorer.

Adding many folders

With the "Add Dir" function it is possible to quickly build a playlist from your digital image collection. Click the "Add Dir" button in the playlist window and the Add Dir dialog will be displayed. Select the root/top folder from where you want to start adding images. From the "Subdirectories" dropdown list you can select if you want to add images only from the selected folder or from the selected folder and its subdirectories. From the "In each folder" menu you can select if you want to add all images from each folder or just a few images. The "Include archives" lets you treat archives as subfolders in regard to how many images are added from a folder. The filenames field is a text string that must exist in all filenames to add. If the field is empty all images will be added, if for example the field contains the string "2006" all photos containing "2006" in the filename would be added and the rest of the files skipped.

Add directory dialog

For example: A folder contains one archive and 10 images, the option are set to add one image from each folder and to include archives. The playlist will contain the first image in the folder and and first image from the archive.

The ability to add only a few images from each folder gives you the power to quickly create a playlist with a sample of your image collection. It is then easy to go on and use the contect menu in the playlist to find the folders of the images you are interested and them. A good techinque is to use the lock function after each new add to be able to quickly clear away your initial playlist ones you have added the images you want.

Chapter 6. Viewing the web

Opening a web page

When the Inzomia viewer is started from the desktop or the start menu the program is started in the browser layout.

If you started the viewer to view an image or folder you can select the browser layout by double clicking in the title bar of the web browser window.

To open the Inzomia viewer start page press the "Home" button.

The browser window

The Inzomia image viewer home page contains a number of links to image search engines you can use to find images.

The browser window

To enter a URL directly click the "Open" button in the browser windows toolbar.

Favorites

To open a page from you favorites list click the "Favorites" button from the Explorer windows toolbar.

Grabbing a web page as an image

When a web page is loaded click on the "As Image" button to take a snapshot of the web page. The image will be loaded into the Image window and you will be presented with a dialog to save the image.

The Grab as image function takes the complete web page and saves it. There is no need to scroll the page as all parts are saved not only the area visible in the window.

Grabbing large web pages can consume a very large amount of memory. If the viewer needs to allocate what seems like too much memory a dialog will be displayed as a warning. If you decide you still want to continue there is a risk the program will crash or that other running programs will crash as they run out of memory.

Grabbing photos from a web page

When you click the grab button all photos on the current page and photos linked directly from the page will be grabbed. When a grabbed image is downloaded it is added to the current playlist. To cancel grabbing before all photos are downloaded click the "End grab" button.

The grab function only grabs the file formats you can add to a playlist. For example, gif images are not grabbed which is a good thing as gif images are normally used for design elements on web pages like logos, buttons and separators. In the preferences it is possible to set filters to prevent some images to be added to the playlist.

Popup stopper

The browser window has a popup stopper that will warn you if a web page tries to open a new window. It is then up to you to allow the window to open or decline the request. In there preferences there is an option to always block all popup window if you do not want the dialog at al.

Double back function

When visiting a web page that redirect you to another page it might be hard or impossible to use the back button since you are directly redirected to the page you came from. When you hold the shift button while clicking the back button you skip the previous page and go directly two steps back in the browser history and avoid the redirecting page.

Chapter 7. Using layouts

Selecting layouts

The viewer has ten different window layouts you can switch between by holding down the "left Alt key" while pressing 0-9. When you change window sizes or position the changes will be saved in the current layout and used the next time you run the program.

Layouts 1 to 4 are each assigned to a specific window: Image window(1), Browser window(2), Playlist window(3) and Explorer window(4). These layouts can also be selected by double-clicking the titlebar of the respective window or pressing the button in the upper right corner next to the close window button.

Smart layouts

When one of the window layouts is selected the Inzomia viewer will try to automatically select the right layout based on your actions. For example if the browser layout is selected and you doubleclick an image in the playlist window the layout will be change to the image layout.

Chapter 8. Viewing media files

What are media files

The Inzomia viewer support viewing of many different media files not directly supported inside playlists. While it does not make sense to create a slideshow containing a movie but you still probably want to be able to look at it.

Viewing media files

Viewing media files.

Opening a media file

Media files are opened from the shell window and are played in the browser window. Locate the file you want to view in the shell window and double click it or select open from the context menu. If the media type is supported it should open up inside the browser window. If the format is unsupported the Inzomia viewer will try to open it through the windows shell. To view media files you need other viewers installed on you computer, for example to view pdf files with the Inzomia viewer you need to have the Adobe Acrobat viewer installed.

Viewing pdf file

Viewing a Adobe pdf file.

Codecs

Some media formats, for example avi movies, need a codecs to be installed on the computer for the media to play. The type of codec needed depends on how the avi file was originally encoded and separate codecs are required for audio and video. Some popular codecs include DivX (http://www.divx.com/), Cinepak (http://www.cinepak.com/) and Indeo (http://www.ligos.com/)

Downloading plugins

If you are missing a plug-in it will be downloaded automatically from the internet provided you have an internet connection. If for some reason this does not work download the plug-in from the developers web page. Windows media file can be found at www.microsoft.com, QuickTime can be found at www.apple.com, RealOne can be found at www.real.com and Adobe Acrobat Reader can be found at www.adobe.com.

Troubleshooting

Because the Inzomia viewer uses third party plug-ins to play media formats there is a possibility that a particular file does not play inside the viewer or in the worst case even crashes the viewer. If this happens try to download the latest version of the required plug-in, the media formats table lists what type of program is needed for the different types of media formats. Some media types require the right codec to work, make sure you have the codecs installed. If a movie plays without sound you are probably missing an audio codec, to solve the problem start to search the source from where you got the media file.

Chapter 9. Encryption support

The Inzomia viewer can show images protected with Inzomia image encrypt. You can download image encrypt from http://www.image-encrypt.com

Why encrypting images

There is a very high likelihood that someone is looking at you photos, do YOU want that? Computers are vulnerable newly found breaches in windows, web browser and other software is discovered almost on a daily basis. People can get access to your photos for example by hacking, a virus, vlan, shared folders or simply by using the same computer as you.

By encrypting your photos with image encrypt you make sure it is you that decide who sees your photos. Encrypting images help you protect your privacy and secure company secrets. Viewing encrypted images is just as easy as viewing normal images with the Inzomia image viewer.

Some Features:

  • Protects privacy.
  • Easy to use.
  • Automatically decrypts photos before viewing ( provided you have the key )
  • Safe, Keeps track of the key id used for encyption eliminating the risk to ruin files by encrypting twice.
  • Integration with Inzomia Image viewer make viewing fast and easy.
  • Uses the secure TwoFish algorithm.
  • Gives a meaningful error message when the wrong key is used.

Encrypted images can be viewed directly in the Inzomia image viewer provided you have access to the key for the encrypted image. The free version as well as the full version of the image viewer support decryption. Get the latest version of the Inzomia image viewer from www.freephotobrowser.com.

Chapter 10. Preferences

In the playlist window you can find the button to open the program preferences. Changed preferences are stored between program runs. The preferences dialog is organized into a number of tabs each with settings for a different aspect of the Inzomia image viewer.

General tab

The General tab contains preferences that do not belong to a specific category.

General preferences tab

Preference Description
Use magnetic windows Snap windows to each other and the desktops edges
Show help for image buttons Enable tooltips for the flying buttons in the image window
Hide cursor when not moved Hide the cursor after a few seconds if you have not moved it.
Show full path Show complete pathname to the image in the image window titlebar instead of only the name of the image.
Stop browser popup windows Prevent web pages creating new browser windows.
Select viewer skin Select which of the installed skins to use.
Use the Inzomia viewer to open known images If you have a default image viewer installed the Inzomia viewer will only be available from context menus and not by double-clicking. This option never removes another viewers association. When the viewer is used from the window shell you get a right menu item when clicking an image, folder or zip file from the windows explorer. If you do not have another image viewer installed the Inzomia viewer will be launched when an image is double clicked. If the Inzomia viewer is already running the clicked image will be added to the current playlist.
Reset window layouts Reset all windows to their original size and positions in all layouts.

Performance tab

The Performance tab contains preferences to improve performance on your computer.

Performance preferences tab

Preference

Description

Filtered zoom

Filtering makes the images look smoother when it is enlarged. If you have a really old computer filtering can make viewing slower.

Always 16 bit thumbs

Always use few (16 bit, 65536) colors for the thumbnails. Requires program restart to take effect. If you have large playlists this can make a big difference in the amount of memory used by the Inzomia image viewer. If your desktop is set to use 16 bit color thumbnails will be 16 bit regardless of this option.

Preload next image

Preload the next image in the playlist automatically. Directly when an image has been loaded the next one in the playlist is loaded and decompressed in the background. When the next image is shown it will be available right away since it is already decompressed and ready in memory. Preloading.

Images does require the next image to be decompressed in memory and this can be a problem on computers low on memory. While the next image is decompressing viewing may also be a little slower than with the option turned off.

Preloading is turned on as default and we recommend you keep it on unless you experience problems.

Use mip-map filtering

Uses mip-map filtering for better looking minimized images. This option is especially useful if you have very large scanned documents that you want to be able to read zoomed out. This option can have a huge impact on performance on slower graphics card. It also use about 30 percent memory for the displayed image.

Navigation tab

The Navigation tab contains preferences to control how you pan and zoom the image in the image window

Navigation preferences tab

When a file is added in some way to the playlist the size of the file is compared to this value. If it is smaller than the value it will not be added to the playlist. Use this function for example to ignore thumbnails when adding a folder with images

Do not add images starting with

When a file is added in some way to the playlist the filename of the file is compared to the string. If the filename begins with the entered characters it will not be added to the playlist. Use this function to prevent adding thumbnails generated by software that prefixes the filenames for thumbs, for example ZoomStudio.

Thumbnail size

Set the size of the thumbnails in the playlistwindow. When the size is changed the program will need to be restarted.

Ask to save changed playlist

If checked the program display a save dialog at exit if the playlist isn’t saved?

Show index number

If checked the index number of the image will be drawn next to the filename in the playlist.

Scroll playlist

If checked the playlist window will scroll to show new thumbnails as they are generated.

Auto save playlist

If checked the program will save the current playlist when the program closes. The playlist is saved to the path you enter. The next time you start the program the playlist will be loaded.

Chapter 11. Inzomia Viewer FAQ

Last updated: 2005-11-30

About Adware and Spyware

The Inzomia image viewer does not contain Adware, Spyware or any other program installed without your knowledge.

How to I uninstall?

Select Uninstall from the Inzomia folder in the start menu or uninstall the program from the add/remove programs option in the control panel.

The program crashes, any ideas?

The most common reason for the viewer to crash is that some other program earlier did crashed or did something illegal. Try to restart the computer and see if the problem goes away.

Another reason for the viewer to crash is problem with the graphics drivers. Try downloading new drivers from the manufacturer of your graphics card. If you have a laptop computer go to the manufacturers home page since laptop computer often have modified graphics drivers.

Try using a different bitdepth on the desktop and see if it makes a difference.

Check how much space you have left on your windows harddisk, working with images can take up alot of memory and if the swap runs out the program might crash.

If you do not manage to solve the problem please report it to us with as much information as possible. We sometimes get bug reports saying, Inzomia does not work, and with only this information we ca not do anything to solve the problem. The software does work on a lot of computers we need to know exactly what may cause it to not work on your specific computer. How do you reproduce the problem, does this happen when loading a specific file, what is your computer configuration? What bit depth do you use on the desktop. Do not forget to let us know the program you are having trouble with (Inzomia viewer 3, inzomia plug-in, Zoom Studio, Image encrypt etc)

The developers at Inzomia can be reached at tech@inzomia.com

Problem viewing images

A very few people have had problem viewing images in the viewer, for example the image window only displays a gray or white image. This has happened at start, when going to fullscreen or when playing a slideshow. The Inzomia image viewer uses DirectX to get hardware acceleration from your graphic card. This makes the Inzomia viewer depending on the drivers installed on your computer. The drivrs used by DirectX is not the same as used by normal windows, it is possible that slower image viewers work while the Inzomia viewer fails.

You should try to reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and perhapps try a different version of them. Getting the absolute latest drives is not needed but a simple reinstall may fix your problems.

On some computer system the tranitions can be a problem, try turning them of from the transition property page in the preferences.

The program is very unresponsive, what can I do?

First of all the computer may not use hardware acceleration. Always make sure you have the latest graphics driver for your computer. As an example the first windows 2000 version had disabled hardware acceleration for many of its default graphics drivers.

Another possibility is that you do not have enough video memory. This is usually not a problem today. If you have two megabyte or less video memory you can try setting the desktops bit-depth to 16 bit which may make a huge difference. Also try to make the image window smaller. Sometimes a few pixels smaller window can make the program run ten times as fast.

Virus scanners running in the background may make image loading slower if they are badly written or you are using an older computer.

Filesharing software often puts a heavy load on both your harddisk and cpu.

Open the performance tab in the setting dialog and try to disable mipmap filtering.

May I redistribute the viewer on my site?

Feel free to link to us at http://www.izview.com. If you want need to host the viewer on your site we would like you to contact us first at sales@inzomia.com. We also offers customized viewers based on the 3.x version for bundling and promotion.

What file types does the viewer recognize?

The viewer can display images in .jpg, .png, .bmp and .tga format. If you use the professional version of the viewer (registered) the common versions of the tiff image format is supported. The viewer can also read these image formats from inside a zip or rar file. Cbz, Cbr (comic books) files are also supported as they are archive files. The viewer recognizes folders and adds all the known images and zip/rar files in the folder when they are dropped on the playlist window.

The viewer also recognizes a lot of media formats listed in the media formats document including pdf, avi, mpeg and rm files. Media files can only be viewed with the viewer but not placed in a playlist.

A media file does not play

There are a number of possible reasons for this, most having to do with problem with the plug-in doing the playback the file. Try to update the required third party plug-in as described in the media document also make sure you have the required codecs for the media file you want to view.

How does the playlist get sorted?

When files are added to the playlist everything that is added is first sorted alphabetically and then added to the bottom of the current playlist. You can rearrange the order of the playlist with simple drag n drop.

Appendix D. Tutorial: A quick way to browse MyPictures

Introduction

This short text describes a way to view pictures in special folders with the Inzomia image viewer 3.x. We do this by once creating a desktop shortcut pointing to the picture folder. I will assume you are using windows 2000 for this tutorial but the same approach should work in windows 95,98, Me and Xp.

Creating a shortcut

Start by creating a new shortcut to the Inzomia viewer. The viewer is by default installed in "c:/program files/inzomia/izview3", open this folder in the windows explorer, Right click the izview3.exe (or simply izview2) file and select "Create shortcut". You should now have a shortcut to the inzomia viewer on your desktop. Double-click the shortcut to make sure that the link work and that the viewer starts and close it down again.

Editing the path

Click the shortcut with the right mouse button and select properties. In the target text field you can see the path to the viewer. What we want to do is start the viewer with a folder as an argument. From the windows explorer, Right click the folder you want to browse and select properties. Now copy the path from the folder to after the path to the viewer. Also make sure to put "" around the path to the folder. Close the property pages and you are ready.

Other ideas

The Inzomia viewer accepts a lot of arguments and it is possible to use more than one path. For example you can create a shortcut to browse "my images" or a download folder for you filesharing program.

Appendix E. Adding new tools

Its possible to add custom tools to the inzomia image viewer that will be executed on the current image or image playlist. A custom tool can for example be an image editor, an ftp client, an archive tool or a custom tool used by you or your company.

In the data folder there is a tools folder. The tools folder is scanned for xml files that defines the tools to be added to Inzomia image viewers file menu.

<tool>
<title>Edit image</title>
<cmd>mspaint.exe</cmd>
<arg>{image}</arg>
</tool>

Title is the text that will appear in the File menu. Cmd is the program that will be executed and arg is the argument that will be given to the program, arg can include {image} that will be replaced with the image displayed in the image window or {playlist} that will be replaced with the playlist in the playlist window. Problems when you try to run your tools are reported in the about box.

Appendix F. Creating Skins for Inzomia Viewer 3

Introduction

Skins are used to change the look of the Inzomia Image viewer. All of the main windows have skins and it is possible to change the buttons displayed inside the image window, even how the color cycling works. To create a new skin you need to create a skin definition file and the graphic files it refers to. There are a lot of things to change and to get everything right the best way to get started is to start with one of the supplied skins and change it bit by bit and test after each change.

The currently used skin can be changed in the general tab from the Inzomia image viewer preferences.

Files

Each skin has all its files in a folder in data/skins/ relative to the installation folder. The name of the folder will be the name of the skin in the preferences dialog. Each skin is made up of four image files and one .xml file. The name of the files cannot be changed, they should be:

File name Dimension Format Description
Texture.png 256x256 pixels 24 bit color image in png format Graphics for buttons inside the image window.
A_texture.png 256x256 pixels 8 bit grayscale image in png format Alpha channel for graphics inside the image window.
Background.jpg Any size Jpeg image The image displayed in the image window when the viewer is started without an image.
Image.bmp Max 1024x1024 pixels 24 bit Window bitmap image Graphics for all windows and buttons outside the image window.
Skin.xml n/a Xml file Style data and information about from where to pick the graphics.

Texture images

The texture images must be named texture.png and a_texture.png. Booth files MUST be exactly 256x256 pixels. The texture.png contains the buttons displayed in the image area on top of the image. The a_texture.png should be a grayscale image and is the transparency for each pixel in the texture. A white pixel in the a_texture.png image indicate that the pixel from the texture should be taken as it is, a black pixel that nothing should be displayed from the texture and a gray pixel that the pixel should have transparency. In the image below notice the font for the tooltips in the image window is drawn in the alpha channel.

The image.bmp image

The image.bmp image has to be in bmp format. The size must not be larger than 1024x1024. The image.bmp image contains the whole user interface graphics. The skin.xml file tells from where in the image the graphics is picked.

The skin.xml file

Introduction

The skin.xml file specifies how the skin components are used to form the skin you see in the Inzomia viewer. The format of the skin.xml is xml and can be edited in a standard text editor like windows notepad or by an xml editor. The skin parser in the Inzomia viewer is optimized for size and speed and it does not completely comply with the xml standard, for example it can only parse ascii text and it does not handle comments.

The skin.xml file is organized into a number of sections described below. Open the skin.xml file and view it as you read the description of each section.

Colors when they are needed are given as rgb values where each component is a number from 0 to 255 (0,0,0 is black and 255,255,255 is white).

Positions are given as an x any y coordinate in pixels where 0,0 is the upper left corner.

Bitmap graphics is given as rectangles from where the graphics is picked. For buttons the given rectangle is for the button in normal state. Below the normal button in the image should follow the highlighted button (when the cursor is above it), the selected button and the disabled button. Where buttons are specified most often also a position is given in pixels of where to place the button. The reference for button positions differs depending on the button type. Text buttons are declared inside an instance tag:

<instance>
<id>28</id>
<from>83 0 136 29</from>
<pos>386 24</pos>
<text>4 7</text>
<instance>

Where id specifies the action that will be performed when the user clicks the button, from is the rectangle from where to fetch graphics for the normal state of the button. Pos is the position of the button, text is the position inside the button for the text label.

The complete skin definition must be enclosed in a skin tag.

Buttons

The playlist window, browser window and the explorer window contain text buttons. Each window specifications have a button tag where each button instance is declared. Each instance has an id specifying the function that will be performed when the button is pressed. The following table lists all available button ids and their functions. It is not possible to use a button id in any other window than the one specified in the list.

General section

The general only contains the msg tag which will be displayed in a dialog message when the skin is selected from the preference.

<general> <msg> This skin was created by Fredrik L. </msg> </general>

Image window section

The image window section contains the definition for the image window in windowed and in fullscreen mode.

Specify the font to use for the title in the image window. You can specify a different font for when the window is selected and when it is not.

Pos is where the title is displayed in the window

Color is the color of the title

Size is the font size in points

Type is the name of the font to use

Weight is the weight of the font, 700 is normal, 900 bold.

<imagewindow>
<titlefont>
<pos> 22 3 </pos>
<selectedpos> 22 3 </selectedpos>

<type>ARIAL</type>
<selectedtype>ARIAL</selectedtype>
<weight> 700 </weight>
<selectedweight> 900 </selectedweight>
</titlefont>

Topleft, topmiddle and topright specify the rectangle from image.bmp that will be used for the titlebar. The topmiddle part must be specified as it determines the height of the bar. If the title bar is wider than the given rects the middle part will be tiled.

<topleft>
0 128 20 151
